When, and why, you should see a dentist if you experience this

Happy February, patients and friends!

If you’ve been suffering from sharp and dreadful tooth pain that won’t seem to give you a break – unfortunately, you’ve got reason to worry. Our Hamilton dentists will tell you why.

Irreversible, or Reversible? There are some tell-tale signs…

There’s a big difference between regular teeth sensitivity/discomfort and unnerving or chronic tooth pain. If your tooth pain came about spontaneously and without a trigger, such as an ice cold popsicle to the tooth or taking a sip of Timmy’s tea far too early – then there’s a good chance it’s irreversible pulpitis (and not reversible pulpitis). And if this is the case, you shouldn’t put off seeing the dentist until the pain is no longer bearable.

The proof is in the pulp.

Irreversible pulpitis is a condition that occurs when the tooth’s pulp (the part that keeps it alive) becomes severely infected or damaged beyond recovery. Causes of irreversible pulpitis include dental fillings that are too close to the nerve, trauma from repeated restorative dental restorations or a fracture that extends to the tooth’s root, or deep tooth decay that surpasses the dentin (second) layer of the tooth.

Reversible pulpitis, on the other hand, is a condition that occurs when the tooth is experiencing mild inflammation in the pulp – but it isn’t anything to be concerned about. Reversible pulpitis is easily detectable as it usually presents itself as a quick response to hot or cold temperature that leaves as soon as the stimulus is removed.

If you aren’t sure what’s going on with your tooth/teeth… see your dentist.

If you’re experiencing tooth pain that concerns you, time is of the essence: get to a dental professional as soon as you can!

Remember… longer you put off the pain, the more likely your tooth will require a more extensive procedure – or worse, that your tooth is beyond saving.
