The light at the end of the oral cavity…
By properly looking after the health of your mouth every day, you can prevent future problems and may even be able to reverse some damage. All it takes is your commitment and a healthy attitude towards oral health.
With that said, here are the top 5 “Dental Regrets” that so many of us share:
1. Cavities.
Maybe your sweet tooth has caused a little destruction, or maybe it’s caused quite a bit! Maybe you don’t even have a sweet tooth, but you’re one of the “lucky” ones with a high caries risk despite your oral hygiene efforts. Don’t worry – as long as you work to keep your teeth (and your fillings) clean by brushing and flossing daily and seeing your dentist routinely, you’re doing what you should.
2. Receded gums.
You may have brushed (or have been brushing) too hard without knowing it, and this may have caused your gums to pull away from your teeth. Or alternatively, you may have been neglecting a proper daily flossing and brushing routine which has had an effect on the health of your gums. The good news is, with what you know now, you can work to prevent more recession from recurring. You can also talk to our Hamilton dentist about effective treatment options if the level of recession is significant or causing you problems.
3. Smoking.
Smoking can cause many oral health problems, with one of the most noticeable issues being cosmetic: you guessed it, stained or yellowed teeth. The best course of action you can take is to stop smoking completely (and hey, teeth whitening treatments can do you a favor, too)!
4. Not wearing a mouth guard/ sport guard.
Perhaps you played or play competitive sports, or are just a relatively active individual. If you’ve ever experienced dental damage during an aggressive game on the field, you might have wished you had worn a mouth guard if you weren’t. There’s always next time!
5. Biting down on hard objects/food.
Many of us are guilty of biting down on a hard piece of candy, or using our teeth as a tool to open a stubborn bottle cap from time to time. But when it’s too much pressure for our teeth to handle – a tooth or two may end up cracking or chipping. Ouch! Has this happened to you or anyone you know?
However many “dental regrets” you may have, it’s important to remember that your efforts today are all that matter. As long as we learn from the past and work towards great oral health every day, we can all have something to smile about!
